SOCIAL CALENDAR

Over the years your dad and I have received compliments from people who are on the fence about taking the plunge into parenthood.  Uncertainties arise about kids affecting their freedom, social calendar, or life in general.  But then they see us taking you to events that one wouldn't necessarily see a kid at, or at hours most kids are sound asleep, and it gives them hope.  Or at least their social life?  Maybe.  If Mike and Lisa can do it with their kid?  Why couldn't they?

But then again I sometimes wonder that in saving our social life, what affects that will have on you later in life.  Case and point?  The punch bowl at Laurin and Aubrey's annual Halloween party...

Yes, your dad had something to do with it.  He helped design it.  I'm hoping this doesn't come back to bite me in the pocketbook for counseling down the road.

HUMAN

How is it possible for the past 3 years at daycare for you to come home without even the tiniest of stains on your clothes? Julie feeds you spaghetti for lunch.  She had you plant flowers in pots one year for Mother's Day.  You come home with paintings and drawings with markers.  Yet you've never had stained clothes.  I'm convinced Julie is a robot.

Well, Julie isn't a robot.  She's human.  Look what happened...

A casualty from painting pumpkins.  What a relief.  Julie isn't perfect.  But with a three year track record of keeping the clothes safe, she's close to it.  And as for those pants, it's a casualty well worth it for this pumpkin masterpiece...

JEANS

According to you, "Princesses don't wear jeans to the pumpkin patch."  Neither do mermaids, ballerinas and fairies. And neither does Alison, apparently.  Some battles just aren't worth it...

This is what I get for putting you in dresses all summer.  Now that it's fall and the rain is here, you refuse to wear jeans, claiming princesses don't wear them or that they're too tight.

OOPS

After a hard night's work of trick or treating, you next spent a good deal of time meticulously inventorying the fruits of your labor.  Unbeknownst to you, you won't be able to eat half of what you collected.  Not because your mom's a dentist, but because you have a nut allergy.  Whenever someone would let you choose your candy, you always went for the candy with nuts...Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers, Baby Ruths, etc.  Not that your dad and I are complaining.  Someone has to eat them.

SAMPLE LADY

This year I was one of those goofy parents that got dressed up to take her kid trick or treating.  Why?  Because my costume was too good to wear to just one party.  Or so I thought.  An older woman commented how nice it was that I was able to get off work early to take you out.  I'm now wondering how many of your grandparents' neighbors now actually think I'm a sample lady at Costco.

TRICK OR TREAT

Trick or treating at Grandpa and Grandma's condo can be exhausting when there's 31 floors and over 300 units.

COSTUME PARTY

Every year your dad and I look forward to going to Julie's on Halloween.  We're always amused at how excited she gets for this day and look forward to her yearly Halloween costume.  We shudder to think what would happen if we ever forgot to bring your costume to daycare and hope to never find out.

THE GREAT PUMPKIN

Finding the perfect pumpkin can be hard work...

 Maybe it's over here.

Could this be it?

Or is it that one?

 Maybe it's way out here.

 What's that over there?

 Could it be?

Success!

PUMPKIN PATCH

Now that we have you, your dad and I have a license to do all the kid activities that we might otherwise look a little odd doing without a kid.  The pumpkin  patch is one of these activities.  With not only pumpkins, but a petting zoo, bouncy house, pony rides, and midgets, was it for you, or was it for us?  Of course we'll tell you it was for you.  We have the pictures to prove it...

HALLMARK HOLIDAYS

Since your birth, we've been on track to celebrate every remaining major Hallmark holiday for the year with you. Thanks to the commercialization of the American holidays, I've been brainwashed to believe that I'm not a good parent unless you experience each and every holiday with either gifts and/or candy. Lots of gifts and/or candy. Sure there's deeper meaning to all the holidays, but you probably won't learn to appreciate it until you're an adult.

I almost blew it right off the bat with Halloween, but pulled through in the end. Which isn't bad, considering you were three weeks old when Halloween came around. That night we dressed you up in a bunny outfit and sat you in your baby lounger down in the basement. And that was your first Halloween.
No running around the neighborhood collecting candy for you, which would inevitably wind up being for your dad and me. No neighbors oohing and awwing over your cute costume. You didn't even get to answer the door with me and pass out candy to the kids. Nope, none of that. Thanks to a ghoulish invisible monster running rampant that night, swine flu.

You couldn't have been born at a more terrifying time. All over the news people were warned of the impending pandemic caused by this new type of influenza that was deadlier than any other type in recent years. People lined up for hours to get the vaccine and there were mass shortages. Otherwise healthy people who could normally fight off the regular flu were dying from this new flu that came from pigs. Everyone was warned on Halloween to disinfect their door bells and knobs frequently and to not let kids reach their grimy little hands into the candy bowl, so as to not pass along the swine flu.
That's why you spent Halloween night hanging out in the basement, and that's why there was no candy or oohing and awwing. Not that you probably cared about it. You didn't miss out on much upstairs. We got 3 whole trick-or-treaters. I thought I'd be the "cool house" and emptied the candy bowl filled with full sized candy bars into their bags, blew out the jack-o-lanterns, turned off the porch light, and called it a night.

From that night I learned that our neighborhood sucks for trick-or-treating. We were the only ones on the street to have carved pumpkins, and trick-or-treaters were next to non-existent. When you're old enough to realize that Halloween is all about the candy, I won't let you down. We'll drive to a rich neighborhood filled with McMansions and do the trick-or-treating there. If you're going to make the effort to trick-or-treat, why waste your time on snack-size candy bars. Go to where the full sized ones are, and lots of them, right?
